A Texas physician, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for orchestrating a medical fraud scheme that left numerous patients, including children, severely harmed. According to Law & Crime, Dr. Zamora-Quezada falsely diagnosed healthy individuals with serious chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
He then subjected them to unnecessary and aggressive treatments, including chemotherapy, despite knowing they did not require them. Among his victims was an 11-year-old girl who is now permanently bedridden due to the effects of the unwarranted treatments.
The fraudulent scheme enabled Dr. Zamora-Quezada to file over $100 million in false Medicare and Medicaid claims. The financial gain from these claims funded a luxurious lifestyle, including the purchase of a private jet, multiple high-end properties, and luxury vehicles such as Bentleys.
The case began to unravel when other medical professionals started raising concerns. They reported patients arriving with severe side effects linked to treatments that were inconsistent with their actual medical conditions. Upon further examination, authorities discovered that many of these patients showed no clinical signs of the illnesses they were allegedly being treated for.
This widespread deception led to a federal investigation that ultimately exposed the extent of the fraud. During sentencing, victim impact statements highlighted the trauma and long-term physical suffering caused by the unnecessary treatments. Federal prosecutors condemned Dr. Zamora-Quezada’s actions as a grave abuse of trust, emphasizing that he exploited his patients for personal financial gain. He will now serve a decade behind bars for his crimes.
